Head of PFG with Turkey Meets with Turkish Ambassador to Serbia

The Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Turkey Milimir Vujadinovic met today at the National Assembly with the Turkish Ambassador to Serbia Ilhan Saygili to discuss the possibilities for advancing interparliamentary cooperation.

Speaking of the relations between Serbia and Turkey, Milimir Vujadinovic pointed to the historical ties that had a significant impact on the connection between the two peoples’ cultures and languages. He also referred to the exceptional relations and mutual understanding of the two presidents, Aleksandar Vucic and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who laid the political foundations of cooperation between Serbia and Turkey, adding that, as the Head of the newly formed Parliamentary Friendship Group with Turkey, he would personally contribute to furthering the cooperation at the parliamentary level.

"Turkey is one of the most important, not only regional, but also global economic powers," Vujadinovic said, adding that Turkey is Serbia's fourth foreign trade partner. Turkey is also one of the favourite tourist destinations for Serbian citizens, he said, emphasizing that Serbia is becoming increasingly popular with tourists from Turkey.

Ambassador Ilhan Saygili agreed that our two countries are closely connected, considering that several million Turkish citizens originate from the Western Balkans region, and particularly from the Raska District or Sandzak, as it is called by the locals.

He conveyed the congratulations of Salman Ayhan, the Head of the PFG with Serbia in theTurkish Parliament, to Vujadinovic on his election as Head of the PFG with Turkey. On the occasion, he also presented him with an invitation for an official visit of the PFG delegation to the Turkish Parliament.

The Ambassador emphasized that, in order to further improve interparliamentary cooperation, it would be of utmost importance to initiate an exchange of visits at the level of parliament speakers, as well as cooperation and intensification of contacts between the working bodies of the two parliaments.

In the course of the conversation, Vujadinovic and Saygili agreed that good relations between Serbia and Turkey are important for the stability of the entire Western Balkans region, and that they are particularly reflected in the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

They agreed that all sensitive issues should be overcome through dialogue, and that they should work on topics that are unquestionably of interest for Serbia and Turkey, as well as the entire region.
