Head of PFG with Sweden Receives Swedish Ambassador to Serbia

The Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Sweden Stefan Janjic spoke with the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden to the Republic of Serbia Charlotte Sammelin about current topics and opportunities for improving cooperation between the two Parliaments.

Janjic pointed out that with its 34 members the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Sweden is one of the largest friendship groups in the National Assembly, and that it is his personal ambition, as Head of the Group, to contribute to connecting and strengthening the cooperation between the parliamentarians of Serbia and Sweden.

The main topic of the meeting was lithium mining in Serbia and Janjic expressed concern about possible future mining. He said that a large number of Serbian citizens are against lithium mining, which they expressed in mass gatherings at the protests held during the year. He also said that part of the professional public is against lithium mining, because jadarite is a unique mineral, that no one has performed lithium extraction in this way and there is no experience or guarantee that it will be safe. Janjic also pointed out the danger of corruption in the decision-making as regards mining, as well as the bad reputation Rio Tinto has in the world.

Ambassador Sammelin is of the opinion that a large amount of the information regarding lithium mining spread in the public is untrue and that it is necessary to inform the citizens in detail about the relevant facts. She believes that there is no room for concern because, speaking through the experience of Sweden at the time it started iron mining, every project of that scale is preceded by a preparatory procedure that lasts up to ten years.

In the continuation of the meeting, the officials agreed that it is possible to strengthen the ties between the two parliaments through joint seminars, study visits and meetings of parliamentarians, primarily at the level of parliamentary friendship groups.
