Head of PFG with Cyprus Meets with Newly-Appointed Cypriot Ambassador

The Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Cyprus Biljana Pantic Pilja met today, in the National Assembly House, with the newly-appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus Andreas Photiou, wishing him a successful mandate in Serbia.

Biljana Pantic Pilja said that the PFG with Cyprus comprises 57 members and that the current legislature has shown great interest in cooperation with Cyprus. Speaking of the traditionally good relations between the two countries, she said that Cyprus is a true friend to Serbia. She took the opportunity to thank the Ambassador for the support of Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, as well as its European integration. She added that, as the Head of the delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, she is advocating for the resolution of the issue of Cyprus and that Cyprus can rely on Serbia’s support.

The officials confirmed their mutual support regarding the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the two countries, stressing the need to respect international law in multilateral forums such as the PACE and the UN.

They also spoke of a future visit of a Cypriot parliamentary delegation, also making plans for a meeting of the two parliaments’ friendship groups.

Ambassador Photiou thanked the host for the reception, saying how glad he was to be given a mandate in a friendly country. He said that during his mandate in Serbia he would continue to work on deepening the ties between the two countries’ legislative and executive bodies, economic and investment ties included, and bringing the two national cultures closer together. He stressed that he would continue to be the voice of Serbia in Brussels and that he would continue to support Serbia in terms of its full membership in the EU.

The PFG Head and the Cypriot Ambassador also discussed the promotion of Cyprus in Serbia, as a tourist destination that is increasingly popular in our country, and the good connection between the two countries through the introduction of a direct flight.
