Great Loss for Women’s Parliamentary Network

WPN Coordinator Olena Papuga on the death of MP Vera Paunovic (1947 – 2020):

“The members of the Women’s Parliamentary Network extend their deepest condolences on the death of their dear colleague Vera Paunovic. Vera was an active fighter for the rights of women and betterment of the lives of all Serbian citizens and coordinator of the WPN in the 11th legislature of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia. She was a shining example of the conscious responsibility the office of MP entails and stood firm by her principles grounded in the fundamental human values without rancor and with full respect for all of her colleagues irrespective of party, religious or other affiliation.

In her lifetime and term of office, in addition to her other important achievements concerning the improvement of the status of women in Serbia, thanks to her support an important victory was achieved in the amendment of the Law on Election of MPs which now guarantees 40% participation for the less represented gender.

With her departure the people of Serbia lost a noteworthy representative in the parliament.
Our deepest condolences to her family and party colleagues.
Rest in peace and thank you.”
