Gojkovic Opens Environmental Protection Conference

National Assembly Speaker Maja Gojkovic opened the conference entitled "State of the Planet Awareness Day - overview and prospects" at the National Assembly, stressing that our attitude toward the environment needs to be more responsible, that it takes more than just awareness of the consequences of modern civilization and technology, that we need to take concrete steps to live in harmony with nature, not in discord.

Gojkovic emphasized the key role of the Serbian Parliament as the body that passes environmental laws, ensures their quality and supervises their implementation, as well as verifies international agreements such as the recently ratified Doha Amendment and the Paris Agreement, which is an important topic in the international community these days.

"It is our common duty to work together to conserve the environment and meet our objective, our moral and ethical challenge, and protect the planet", said Gojkovic adding that climate change and pollution respect no state borders and that our region of South-East Europe is currently threatened by many natural disasters - floods, drought, extremely high temperatures, earthquakes, landslides, storms...

The National Assembly Speaker said that a lot has to be done to protect the environment in Serbia, particularly in respect of the country's EU accession process and rapprochement with its legal system, especially through Chapter 27 which we are still to tackle.

"This is a key issue for Serbia and at the same time a big challenge. Besides funding and material, this whole process requires experts in the field."

The summit, co-organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection and the Embassy of Morocco, is, among others, attended by the State Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection Stana Bozovic, ambassadors of Morocco, France and the EU Delegation to Serbia, and will include the photo exhibition "Protected Natural Heritage in Serbia" aimed at drawing attention to the protection of nature parks, reserves and outstanding landscapes.
