Gojkovic Opens Conference “Developing Gender Equality through Regional Cooperation”

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic opened the regional conference “Developing Gender Equality through Regional Cooperation”, stressing that our region needs women to take an active role, especially in view of all the political and economic challenges facing the Western Balkans and the European Union.

Gojkovic said that Serbia and the National Assembly are ready and open to cooperation on gender equality issues with the women and institutions in the region and today’s conference is an excellent opportunity to send the message that there can be no growth in any of the countries or region as a whole without women.

“When dealing with the gender equality challenges in Serbia and the region it is important to promote the policy that women, our work and knowledge, are essential for policy creation, economic growth and tackling the many problems of the modern world”, said Gojkovic at the gathering in the Palace of Serbia, organized by the Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs.

Gojkovic said that women in Serbia hold a number of important, leading positions in the legislative and executive power, as well as the judiciary, being the head of the Government, Assembly, National Bank of Serbia, Constitutional Court, Republic Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Office of the War Crimes Prosecutor, and the 94 women MPs make up 37.6% of the Parliament.

Gojkovic said that Serbia is about to pass a new gender equality law to ensure the representation of women by stipulating that the electoral lists contain at least 40% of candidates of the less represented gender, which will be another step forward in preventing discrimination in employment, the right earn an income, social and health care and in all other areas including the media which should not encourage gender discrimination, prejudice and stereotypes.

Gojkovic said that Serbia had in the previous period improved the legislative framework for the prevention of domestic violence, however the numbers of women who fall victim to violence, sometimes with fatal consequences, are worrying, she added emphasizing the importance of a full and consistent application of the Law on Prevention of Domestic Violence and all the mechanisms it provides.

Gojkovic said that regional cooperation is vital for the exchange of experiences concerning the adoption and implementation of laws aimed at improving the position of women in line with European standards in view of the region’s aspirations to become a part of the European Union and reminded the attending that the Women’s Parliamentary Network initiated forging regional ties between women parliamentarians in South East Europe by organizing the first conference in Belgrade 2015 to foster cooperation on issues concerning gender equality.
