Gojkovic Meets with Parliament Speakers on Margins of IPU Assembly

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic had a series of bilateral meetings with some of the parliament speakers taking part in the 141st Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Belgrade, with whom she talked advancing parliamentary and bilateral relations, Euro-integration and Kosovo-Metohija.

In the meeting with Slovenian National Assembly Speaker Dejan Zidan, the two officials agreed that interparliamentary cooperation is very well-developed, dynamic and intensive, as evidenced by the parliament speakers’ sixth meeting in the span of one year.

Gojkovic and Zidan opined that the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation between the Serbian and Slovenian national assemblies in 2018 opened up new avenues of on the European integration process, at the level of working bodies and parliamentary friendship groups.

Zidan thanked the hosts for the invitation, saying that the Slovenian delegation would have come to the IPU Assembly because of its friendship with Serbia as well as the importance of multilateralism, stressing that the numbers of participants, from 70 parliament speakers to 2000 delegates, testifies that Belgrade has been the political centre of the world in the past few days.

Speaking of Serbia’s Euro-integration, Zidan said that Serbia belongs in the European community adding that the European community needs Serbia, as much as Serbia needs the EU, which is why it is important to boost the efficiency of the process.

Gojkovic thanked Parliament Speaker of Mexico Laura Rojas Hernandez for the country’s principled stance on Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and support in so-called “Kosovo’s” attempts to join international organizations. Gojkovic said that Pristina’s INTERPOL bid is unacceptable because it goes against international law, the Constitution and the objectives of INTERPOL itself.

Gojkovic said that the political relations between the two countries are good and friendly, with no outstanding issues, and that it is the parliamentarians’ role to open up new avenues of cooperation and encourage the governments to comprehensive dynamic cooperation, not just political and parliamentary, but economic as well.

Hernandez said that the Mexican Government respects Serbia and is committed to the development of relations and, adding that the parliamentarians share these values, confirmed Mexico’s political support of Serbia.

Hernandez opined that this is an excellent opportunity to advance relations and, saying that Mexico is open to expanding economic and cultural cooperation with Serbia, invited the Serbian Assembly Speaker to visit Mexico.

The Serbian Assembly Speaker also met with the Parliament Speaker of Kuwait Marzouq Al-Ghanim, whom she thanked for the State of Kuwait’s participation in the IPU Assembly in Belgrade as an opportunity to advance the parliamentary and overall relations between Serbia and Kuwait.

Gojkovic said that geography should not be an obstacle to the development of friendly relations between the two nations bound by historically good relations from the times of the Non-Aligned Movement, adding that the Serbian National Assembly is prepared to give its contribution to the development of relations and set up a parliamentary friendship group.

Al-Ghanim praised the excellent organization of the 141st Assembly, attended by an outstanding number of parliament speakers and delegations of IPU member states, emphasizing the all-round importance of the theme of the Assembly – strengthening international law, reminding the host of the situation in the Middle East in that context.

Al-Ghanim said that Kuwait considers Serbia a great friend, stressing that the ties between Kuwait and Serbia are historic and the symbol of Kuwait, the three Kuwait Towers were, built by Serbian companies in the early 1970s. Al-Ghanim also mentioned the Serbian Assembly Speaker’s successful visit to Kuwait in 2015 which gave a special impulse to the relations between the two states.
