Foreign Affairs Committee Hosts Algeria-Serbia Parliamentary Friendship Group Delegation

The members of the Foreign Affairs Committee hosted the delegation of the Algeria-Serbia Parliamentary Friendship Group currently in official visit to the Republic of Serbia, in the National Assembly House today.

The two countries were declared to share historically friendly relations grounded in common values and similar experiences.

The Deputy Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Dragan Markovic recalled that the close relations between the two countries date back to the times of the Non-Aligned Movement, adding that the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was one of the first countries to recognize the independence of Algeria. He also used the opportunity to thank Algeria for supporting Serbia’s territorial sovereignty and integrity opining that there is ample room for the two counties to deepen cooperation in great many areas, among them science, healthcare, technology and tourism.

The Head of the Algerian delegation, Samira Barhoum, said that her country continues to invest efforts into deepening cooperation with the countries of the Balkans and Central Europe, as well as deepen political dialogue through an exchange of visits between the two countries, adding that invitations have been extended to the President of the Republic, the government ministers and the MPs. She deemed that the mutual support of the two countries in international forums is at a high level and that Algeria would continue to contribute to the preservation of international law when it comes to protecting a country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. Barhoum said that international law must be defended and stressed that in the next two years, as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Algeria would tackle the issues of Palestine and Western Sahara.

Algerian Ambassador to Serbia Fatah Mahraz spoke of the unbreakable ties between the two peoples who have through history come against similar challenges, adding that Algeria considers Serbia to be a brotherly country with which it wishes to invest into a common future and strengthen their comprehensive friendship. He said that relations such as these encourage Algeria to establish dynamic ties with Serbia in a variety of areas which would add variety to their cooperation.

Foreign Affairs Committee members Edin Djerlek, Dunja Simonovic Bratic and Tanja Radjenovic also took part in the meeting and restated that one of the chief goals of the current National Assembly legislature headed by Ana Brnabic, is to deepen interparliamentary cooperation. They also opined that maintaining parliamentary relations contributes to a favourable environment for commerce and investment.

The officials agreed to continue cooperation through international organisations and forums, especially on issues of common interest, as well as continue to promote peace and stability.
