Foreign Affairs Committee Chairperson Meets with Head of UK Embassy Political Department

The Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Marina Ragus met today with William Hopkinson, Head of the Political Department of the UK Embassy to the Republic of Serbia.

Ragus and Hopkinson exchanged opinions on topics of interest to both countries, primarily on the both sides’ wish to improve understanding and advance parliamentary cooperation. The officials agreed that, in light of the latest world events, we should work on an open parliamentary dialogue as soon as possible.

The Foreign Affairs Committee Chairperson and National Assembly Deputy Speaker reminded the guest that Serbia is a candidate for EU membership and is fully committed to that path, investing efforts in a comprehensive social reform processes. In that sense and in accordance with the European Commission’s plan and our country’s reform agenda, there is a lot of hard work before the current National Assembly legislature, Ragus pointed out. Talking about the two most important geopolitical moments for Serbia, the reception of so-called of Kosovo into the Council of Europe and the vote on the Srebrenica resolution in the UN General Assembly, she apostrophised that Serbia remains committed to the peace and stability of the region and to nurturing good-neighbourly relations, expressing her fear that these two issues do not lead to the stabilisation of conditions in the region, which is not by any means in Serbia’s interest.

William Hopkinson conveyed the British Parliament’s interest in cooperation with the National Assembly’s Foreign Affairs Committee, as well as in improving the overall cooperation between the representative institutions of the two countries. He also pointed out that the UK supports Serbia's European path, seeing it as the centre of the Western Balkans.

The officials agreed that, although they have different views on the issues discussed, only peace and stability can bring prosperity to the Western Balkan region.
