Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Meets with Austrian Ambassador to Serbia

Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Prof. Dr Zarko Obradovic met today with Austrian Ambassador to Serbia H.E. Nikolaus Lutterotti to discuss the relations between Serbia and Austria, European integration and the normalization of relations between Belgrade and Pristina.

The officials agreed that the relations between the two countries and good and friendly with ample potential for improvement. Speaking of the priorities of his country’s Presidency of the EU Council, the Austrian Ambassador said they would focus on the Western Balkan region and the EU enlargement process, which is supported by all the political powers in Austria. He said that Austria supports Serbia both in Brussels and by presenting the country’s EU accession to the wider public as an important foreign policy priority, and through visits of high dignitaries to Serbia. He announced that the Austrian Head of Parliament would soon launch his tour of South-Eastern Europe by a visit to Serbia, thus bolstering the idea that the EU enlargement process should include this region.

Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Prof. Dr Zarko Obradovic said that Serbia has done a lot in the past four years to improve the economic situation in the country, however, Kosovo-Metohija remains the biggest problem, reaffirming that Serbia would never recognize the so-called independence of the southern province and that it is committed to dialogue with Pristina with EU mediation. He said that Pristina never met its obligations under the Brussels Agreement, mentioning the existence of a double standard when it comes to the adherence to the Brussels Agreement and UN Resolution 1244, the Report of Dick Marty, PACE rapporteur and the work of the war crimes court in Kosovo-Metohija. He appealed to the friends from the EU to help Serbia and understand its stance on Kosovo-Metohija in view of the fact that the EU itself does not have a unified stance on finding a solution equally acceptable to the Serbian and Albanian side.

The Austrian Ambassador restated that the EU member states’ common stance is enlargement to the Western Balkans, with the goal of preserving stability and economic prosperity. He stressed that when it comes to the Belgrade-Pristina talks, Austria believes they should be continued. Ambassador Lutterotti praised Serbia’s stance that the economic and other reforms conducted in the country be conducted for the sake of the country and its citizens.

The officials also touched on Serbia’s bilateral relations with the neighbouring countries and the status and rights of national minorities in Serbia.

The meeting was also attended by Deputy Head of Mission Sabine Kroissenbrunner.
