European Integration Committee Members Take Part in 9th COSAP
The 9th Conference of the European Integration Parliamentary Committees of States Participating in the Stabilization and Association Process in South-East Europe (COSAP) was held on 2 and 3 June 2014 in Becici, Montenegro.
Members of the European Integration Committee Ljubisa Stojmirovic, Head of the delegation, and Vera Paunovic, delegation member, took part in the proceedings.
The Conference was attended by the members of the European integration committees of the parliaments of Montenegro, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and, as observer, the members of the Croatian Parliament’s European Affairs Committee.
The Conference addressed internal reform, use of IPA funds, as well as the transparency and inclusion of the European integration process.
In the course of the debate the participants drew attention to the importance of parliamentary oversight over the negotiation process, as well as other elements important for successful negotiations: interparliamentary and regional cooperation. They emphasised the need to strengthen institutional capacities and promote transparency and communication with the citizens about European integration issues.
The meeting also touched on the disastrous floods suffered by Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Croatia in May 2014. Praising the solidarity expressed by the citizens of the region for the population of the flooded areas, the COSAP participants agreed that overall regional cooperation should be intensified so that the countries in the region could react adequately to any future natural disasters.
The delegation of the National Assembly’s European Integration Committee took over the chairmanship of COSAP for the next six months (July-December 2014). The National Assembly’s European Integration Committee will be hosting the 10th COSAP.
At the end of the Conference the participants adopted a Joint Statement.
