Deputy Speaker Ragus Meets with Kazakh Deputy Foreign Minister

National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee Marina Ragus met today with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Roman Vassilenko.

The officials agreed that there is room to improve parliamentary cooperation between Serbia and Kazakhstan within the overall bilateral relations and that it would be, among other things, the focus of future cooperation between the two countries.

Deputy Speaker Ragus informed Kazakh Deputy Foreign Minister Vassilenko in detail about Serbia’s European integration and foreign policy priorities, noting that our country pursues an independent and autonomous policy, respecting the postulates of international law and the UN Charter. A special segment of the conversation was dedicated to current events and the situation in Kosovo-Metohija, with Ragus expressing great concern over Pristina’s unilateral actions which threatened the human, civil and social rights of Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija, making life impossible. She stressed that she hoped the international community would do its job and resolve the situation on the ground, while Serbia remains committed to preserving peace and stability, as well as protecting its people and national identity in Kosovo-Metohija.

In the course of the meeting, Roman Vassilenko, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, stressed that for his country Serbia is an important partner in the Balkans and that it has always believed that the issue of Kosovo-Metohija must be resolved within the framework of UN Resolution 1244 and international law, as evidenced by the fact that Kazakhstan did not recognise the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo. He then announced the visit of the President of his country to Serbia, also opining that in the bilateral relations between Serbia and Kazakhstan there is room for cooperation in many areas of mutual interest, which parliamentary diplomacy can be an incentive for.
