Dacic Meets with Lajcak and Escobar

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Ivica Dacic met today with the EU Special Representative for the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue and other Western Balkan regional issues Miroslav Lajcak and the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and Special Envoy for the Western Balkans Gabriel Escobar.

National Assembly Speaker Ivica Dacic informed the guest with the upcoming elections in Serbia, to be held on 3 April 2022, highlighting his conviction that they would be organised on the territory of Kosovo-Metohija as well. He asked the EU and the US to use their authority to influence the Pristina authorities to make this possible. Speaking of the Kosovo-Metohija issue, Ivica Dacic stressed that Serbia is committed to finding a compromise solution and the only way to do that is dialogue, which we have always been ready for.

Miroslav Lajcak said that with the joint visit with the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, they want to show the entire region that the EU and the US have the same vision for the Balkans, which is membership in the European Union. He stressed that "dialogue is the only process for the normalisation of relations between Serbia and Kosovo", pointing out that after the elections, space would be opened for their intensification.

Gabriel Escobar confirmed the importance of the joint visit to Belgrade and Pristina, underlining that the US wants to send a clear message that it sees the future of the entire region in the EU. "EU-mediated dialogue is the only mechanism the US supports in resolving open issues," Escobar said, emphasising the US readiness to provide the necessary assistance and support.

As regards the formation of the Community of Serb Municipalities, Lajcak and Escobar said that in all the talks they had in Pristina, they sent a clear message that it must be formed and that everything agreed through the dialogue must be implemented. Lajcak pointed out that the EU's position is that elections should be organised in Kosovo as well and that this was discussed during the visit to Pristina.
