On 17 August 2004, the National Assembly unanimously adopted the motion to restore Serbia’s unique symbols – the coat of arms, the flag, and the anthem.

After conferring with chairpersons of deputies’ groups, on 10 August 2004, the Chairman of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Predrag Markovic, formally filed the Proposal of the Recommendation on the Use of National Symbols, supported by signatures of 187 deputies.

The state flag was raised for the first time on the National Assembly flagpole, with the national anthem playing, on Monday 30 August 2004. In addition to the deputies, this ceremony was attended by several hundred people; a plaque on the National Assembly building bearing the new coat of arms was also unveiled at the event.

Mr Markovic also attended the first official performance of the anthem in Serbia, at an event to mark the 90^th anniversary of the Battle of Mt. Cer, as well as the first performance of the anthem abroad, at the memorial service for fallen World War I Serbian soldiers on the Greek island of Corfu.

In 2005, for the first time in over 100 years, the National Bank of Serbia issued 5, 10 and 20-dinar coins, as well as a 200-dinar banknote, featuring the large coat of arms of Serbia. The coins were cast and the note printed from proof dies approved by the Chairman of the National Assembly.
