At the sitting held on 21 July 2026, the members of the Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Committee considered one item on the agenda: Information on the activities concerning the spread of the infectious disease African swine fever, accompanied by Conclusion proposals.
At the very beginning of the sitting, Committee Chairman Marijan Risticevic informed the attending that, by its conclusions, the Government of the Republic of Serbia is setting up operational centres for the suppression of infectious diseases. Due to the outbreak of the African swine fever, mainly in Srem and Macva, where the disease has escalated, at its previous sitting the Committee adopted a conclusion to convene the operational centre for the suppression of the African swine fever and other infectious diseases post haste. As the Committee Chairman said, in the Conclusion Proposal, the Committee asks that a session of the operational centres be convened in full force and that all dedicate themselves to the defence against the plague.
Risticevic said that, annually, we lose about 100,000 pigs and the cumulative loss for the livestock farming and the processing industry is about 100,000 units i.e. 50 million euros. As the loss is considerable, the Conclusion Proposal recommends focusing on disease prevention and control through bio-measures, leading to its subsequent eradication.
Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Dragan Glamocic said that we must all work together for the good of the state and help supress the disease, adding that in a meeting with representatives of the state leadership a decision was made to maximise penalties so as to prevent the further spread of the disease.
The Minister said that the African swine fever is not dangerous to humans, but that it is spread easily and can greatly damage swine breeding, and reports, disinfection and responsible action are vital to stop the spread of the disease.
