13th sitting of the Children’s Rights Sub-Committee

The Children’s Rights Sub-Committee held its thirteenth sitting, chaired by Zivodarka Dacin, on 11 July.

The Children’s Rights Sub-Committee held its thirteenth sitting, chaired by Zivodarka Dacin, on 11 July. The sitting considered an initiative to establish a Children’s Rights Committee.

Speaking of the initiative, Ms Dacin mentioned international treaties, to which Serbia is signatory, concerning children and their rights, as well as national children-related legislation. She paid special attention to the Family Act and the Family Housing Strategy; the Committee also discussed the system designed to protect children from abuse and neglect, and the work done on the children’s ombudsman.

The Children’s Rights Committee, as a parliamentary working body, would have powers that would prove adequate to its work on improving children’s rights and monitoring implementation of laws relating to children.

Following a discussion that saw both Sub-Committee members and other deputies declare in favour of establishing a Committee, the initiative received unanimous approval.
