National Assembly Deputy Speaker Kovacs Meets with UK Embassy First Secretary

National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Chairperson of the European Integration Committee Elvira Kovacs met today with the First Secretary of the United Kingdom Embassy in Serbia Emily Robinson, to discuss the work of the National Assembly, Serbia's European integration and the current political situation in the country.

Elvira Kovacs said that the current National Assembly legislation has paid special attention to intensifying parliamentary diplomacy, as well as adopting laws from the European agenda. She emphasised that Serbia is committed to the European integration process and implementing the reforms necessary for progress on the path to membership in the European Union.

Speaking of the work of the European Integration Committee, Kovacs underlined its significant contribution to Serbia's European integration process, as well as the importance of regular communication and cooperation with the Minister in charge of European Integration.

The National Assembly Deputy Speaker expressed her expectation that negotiating Cluster 3 will be opened in the near future, since, she said, according to the European Commission's assessment, Serbia has been ready to open it for over four years. She also stressed that it is important for the citizens of Serbia to see concrete results and benefits from the European integration process.

During the meeting, Kovacs informed her guest about the implementation of the recommendations of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), as well as about the laws that have been adopted and are being considered at the current National Assembly session, aimed at further improving the electoral process.

First Secretary of the UK Embassy in Serbia, Emily Robinson, was interested in the upcoming parliamentary elections, the prospects for Serbia and the countries in the region’s European integration, as well as the possibilities for furthering regional cooperation.
