The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Dr Vladimir Orlic met today with the President of the Senate of the Kingdom of Belgium Stephanie D'Hose and on the occasion emphasised the interest to further the parliamentary cooperation between the two countries, especially through the work of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Belgium.
Dr Orlic stressed that he believes that Belgian companies are interested in investing in the Republic of Serbia and that all investments from the Kingdom of Belgium are welcome. "Serbia is the best place for investors in this part of Europe and the "Open Balkans" initiative, which originated from the President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic, is an additional impulse for new investments in the entire region," said the Assembly Speaker.
The President of the Senate of the Kingdom of Belgium D'Hose pointed out that, although she is on a short two-day visit to Serbia, she has gained an impression of the hospitality of the people and the beauty of the country, saying that upon her return to Belgium she would convey the message to her compatriots and potential investors to come and get to know Serbia better.
Assembly Speaker Dr Orlic said that membership in the European Union is Serbia’s foreign policy priority and strategic commitment. "Serbia is ready to open Cluster 3 (Competitiveness and inclusive growth). The opening of this cluster would be a validation of what has been achieved and an important incentive on our European path," said the Assembly Speaker.
D'Hose emphasised the importance of Serbia's progress on the European path and the role of parliamentary cooperation in terms of European integration. She was particularly interested in the "Open Balkans" initiative, stressing that cooperation is the basis for better economic integration of the region.
Dr Orlic particularly emphasized that, yesterday, the National Assembly began a Special Session, continued today, dedicated to the situation in Kosovo and Metohija, where the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, personally presented the Report on the process of negotiation with the Provisional Institutions of Self-Government in Pristina and is answering all of the MPs’ questions. "With its dangerous and irresponsible behaviour, Pristina threatens the security of the Serbian people and tries to provoke conflict, while, on the other hand, Belgrade strives for a compromise and tries to preserve peace for everyone. In this difficult situation, we are trying to find a solution, to preserve national and state interests and to be wise for ourselves and for others," said the Assembly Speaker.
The officials agreed that parliamentary cooperation in the coming period would be beneficial for both countries.
