Kosovo-Metohija Committee Chairperson Informs PACE Sub-Committee on the Western Balkans about Situation in Kosovo-Metohija

Danijela Vujicic, Chairperson of the Committee on Kosovo-Metohija of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, spoke at the meeting of the Sub-Committee on the Western Balkans of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, held in Belgrade.

"I am here today to express my concern regarding the situation in Kosovo-Metohija, where Serbs have become the target of continuous discrimination and repression. The actions of Albin Kurti's government in the last few years represent a serious threat to the stability of the region and the rights of the Serbian community," said Vujicic.

She pointed out that the concern of the Serbian state for Serbian and other non-Albanian people living in Kosovo-Metohija is justified, bearing in mind that in that area, especially in the north of Kosovo-Metohija, basic human rights and freedoms, movement of people and goods, are being violated on a daily basis. The pressure of the Pristina authorities on the Serbian population is calculated and in a way that results in new displacement of the remaining Serbs, Vujicic pointed out. She stressed that from 2013 to now, Serbia has had a constructive approach and is fulfilling its obligations from the Dialogue, because it is clearly committed to the path of normalisation of relations. On the other hand, Pristina does not respect the obligations from the Brussels Agreement and has not yet established the Community of Serb Municipalities. The property of Serbs and other non-Albanian population in Kosovo-Metohija is stolen, usurped, ethnically motivated incidents are constant. Through the laws that the Pristina authorities pass in the Kosovo Assembly, stolen Serbian property is "legalised", Vujicic points out.

Vujicic reminded the attending that Kurti had recently forcefully closed the public institutions for Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija, thus depriving them of basic services and procedures and that the Government of the Republic of Serbia had called for the return to “status quo ante” as the fundamental step for the suppression of escalating effects of unilateral moves, preservation of dialogue and return to stability. Belgrade listed concrete, essential measures needed for the return to “status quo ante”, which are vital for the suppression of the destabilising effects of Kurti’s uncoordinated and destabilising actions.

“The complexity and proportions of the problems are such that without the position and help of the international community, including Council of Europe, Pristina will not stop intimidating Serbs and other non-Albanian people, will not stop usurping their property and endangering their fundamental human rights and freedoms,” concluded the Chairperson of the Committee on Kosovo-Metohija.
