Judiciary, Public Administration and Local Self-Government Committee Holds Fourth Public Hearing in Belgrade
The National Assembly House in Belgrade hosted the Fourth Public Hearing of the Committee on the Judiciary, Public Administration and Local Self-Government on the topic “Presentation of the Bill amending and modifying the Law on the Constitutional Court; Bill amending and modifying the Law on the Election of MPs; Bill amending and modifying the Law on Local Elections and the Bill amending and modifying the Law on the Election of the President of the Republic, submitted by MP Miroslav Petrasinovic”.
Committee Chairman Dr Ugljesa Mrdic greeted the attendees: National Assembly Deputy Speaker Marina Ragus, Minister of Public Administration and Local Self-Government Snezana Paunovic, representatives of the EU Delegation in Serbia, OSCE Mission in Serbia, the Embassy of Norway, members of the Republic Electoral Commission, members of the Commission for the Revision, Verification and Control of the Accuracy and Updating of the Voters’ Register, representatives of the Constitutional Court, Belgrade University Faculty of Law, Institute for Comparative Law, Centre for Free Elections and Democracy, representatives of political organisations and the interested public.
He said that the Committee had decided to organise four public hearings on the topic so as to contribute to the transparency and inclusivity of the process of improving the electoral legislation.
In her introductory speech Minister Paunovic highlighted the importance of adopting the proposed legislation for improving the electoral process and strengthening public trust in it.
The submitter, MP Miroslav Petrasinovic said that all the proposed bills are part of the broader efforts to improve the electoral process conducted in cooperation with the OSCE/ODIHR Office in order to improve the electoral conditions.
He reminded that the National Assembly had last year amended the Law on the Unified Electoral Roll making thorough changes concerning the electoral roll. He then presented the four bills to the participants of the public hearing in detail.
In the discussion that followed, the participants exchanged opinions, views and suggestions on the proposed legislation.
Dr Ugljesa Mrdic said he expected that the bills will soon be put onto the agenda of a National Assembly session, adding that the views and opinions shared at the public hearing would prove useful.
