Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality Committee Delegation At Interparliamentary Meeting in European Parliament

At the invitation of the European Parliament’s Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM), the Chairman of the National Assembly Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality Aleksandar Markovic and Committee member Sonja Jefic Brankovic took part in the Committee’s interparliamentary meeting (ICM) organised in cooperation with the Directorate for Relations with National Parliaments, on the occasion of Women’s Day, with the topic “Strengthening the Women, Peace and Security Agenda – upholding women rights in Defence, Security and Peace”.

The meeting was held on 6 March 2025, in the European Parliament, in Brussels.

This year’s topics covered a number of priorities, starting with the need to ensure the full participation of women in decision-making processes, especially defence, security and peacebuilding, where their leadership guides to a more inclusive and durable peace. It was emphasised that it is essential to protect women and girls in conflict and post-conflict settings from trafficking, exploitation and the use of rape as a weapon of war, while preventing gender-based consequences of conflict, including violence against women and domestic violence.

It was stressed that efforts for gender-responsive relief and recovery must prioritise women's access to justice, healthcare and psychosocial support. Integrating gender issues into security institutions is also a priority as it fosters accountability, equality and resilience, creating a more effective and inclusive peace process.

The meeting was addressed by women in leadership positions, including the military, who shared their experiences, as well as pointed out the obstacles they faced.
