Becic and Antonijevic on Improving Cooperation Concerning Security Services Control and Protection of Citizens' Rights
The Chairman of the Security Services Control Committee, MA Igor Becic, met today with the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Milan Antonijevic, as part of an initiative to improve communication and cooperation between the Security Services Control Committee and the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality.
In the course of the meeting the officials discussed the modalities of future operational cooperation, as well as the improvement of the mechanisms for controlling the work of security services, with full respect for human rights and freedoms.
Becic emphasised that the work of the Committee "does not begin and end in the meeting room", but that the Committee members continuously supervise the activities in the field, through visits to service headquarters and regional centres.
Speaking about the challenges in terms of overseeing the work of security services, Becic pointed out that one of the biggest challenges is striking a balance between protecting national security and preserving human rights and freedoms, while at the same time preserving the secrecy of the services' work, so as not to diminish their efficiency.
The Commissioner for the Protection of Equality Milan Antonijevic said that the cooperation between the Security Services Control Committee and the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality is of particular importance for strengthening democratic oversight of the work of security services, especially in the area of human rights protection, prevention of discrimination and handling of citizens' complaints.
The officials expressed their belief that the good cooperation between the Committee and the Commissioner will continue in the future, with the aim of further strengthening institutional cooperation, protecting citizens' rights and improving the security system of the Republic of Serbia.
