Assembly Speaker with Maldives Foreign Minister: Serbian State Institutions Stand with Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Dr Vladimir Orlic met today with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives H.E. Abdulla Shahid with whom he discussed the further intensification of political dialogue and development of overall cooperation.

"The bilateral relations between Serbia and the Maldives have been characterised by friendship since the times of the Non-Aligned Movement, with high-level meetings lending additional impetus to the development of relations today," said Dr Orlic at the beginning of the meeting.

The officials expressed willingness to establish parliamentary cooperation, especially through the work of the Parliamentary Friendship Group, the establishment of which was announced by Dr Orlic in the current legislature of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives applauded this decision, stressing that it will contribute to the further strengthening of relations between the two countries.

Speaking about the current situation in Serbia’s southern province, the Assembly Speaker emphasised that Serbia remains committed to the policy of peace and stability, and informed Minister Shahid about the terror faced by the Serbian people in Kosovo-Metohija. "We have warned that the flagrant violation of international law, destruction of the values the UN is based on and the disrespect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of Serbia in Kosovo-Metohija represent a dangerous precedent. Today, it is clear that we were right. The Serbian people in Kosovo-Metohija are in a difficult situation and have the support of all of our country’s institutions. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, our National Assembly and the Serbian Government stand with the Serbs in Kosovo. In addition to the most serious threats against the property of Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija, close to 10,000 ethnically motivated physical attacks on Serbs have been recorded over the past twenty years."

Minister Shahid and Dr Orlic agreed there is room to improve cooperation in the field of education, economy, primarily through increasing foreign trade exchange, as well as in the tourism sector.
