The Civil Sector

In cooperation with the Committee for European Integrations, the Serbian European Movement realized a project titled “Meet Your Neighbor – the European Parliamentarian”. The goal of the project was to provide the Parliament and parliamentary diplomacy with an increasingly important position in the process of European integrations. The project was to be realized in three phases, with the participation of members of the European Parliament and representatives of civil society organizations from neighboring European Union member countries. During the first phase of the realization, panel discussions were organized in border regions of Serbia. From each country, two members of the European Parliament participated, as well as one representative of the partner civil society organization.

Members of the Committee for European Integrations and the Department staff are also participating in the project titled „National Agreement on the European Future of Serbia”, implemented for the past several years by the non-governmental organization The Serbian European Movement through the organization of working groups and debates on topics important for the process of European integration of Serbia.
Members of the Committee for European Integrations and the Department staff are also participating in the project titled „Transfer Your Knowledge – Become a Mentor”, also organized by the non-governmental organization Serbian European Movement.

In cooperation with the Serbian European Movement and the office of the Council of Europe in Belgrade, a project of regional conferences on Serbia’s accession to the European Union titled „Serbia on the Road to European Integrations” was finalized within the reporting period. Six round tables have been organized. The project was initiated in 2007 with aim to acquaint the local self-governing bodies and the civil sector with the process of integration, and it was completed in January 2009. The project was financed by the Balkan Trust for Democracy and the project titled “Joint Initiative of the Council of Europe and EU in Support of Parliamentary Institutions”. In January 2009, a round table held in Valjevo represented the last project’s activity.

In cooperation with the Serbian European Movement, the Committee initiated the Project of regional conferences on the accession of Serbia to the European Union, with aim to promote the Declaration of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and the Government of Serbia on joint activities relating to the process of integration of Serbia in the European Union and with aim to better acquaint the local self-governing bodies and the civil sector with the process of integration. The project was financed by the Balkan Trust for Democracy and the project titled “Joint Initiative of the Council of Europe and EU for the Support of Parliamentary Institutions” (this project will be implemented by the Office of the Council of Europe in Belgrade during the year 2008).

March 2009 marked the completion of the project titled “Strengthening of Professional Capacities of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia in Charge of the European Integration Process” implemented during the two previous years in cooperation with the Slovak foundation Pontis and financed by the Bratislava-Belgrade Fund. The goal of this project was to assist with the work of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia relating to the process of statutory harmonization and other issues that will represent the subject of the work of MPs and staff of the Department for European Integrations during the ensuing process. A project that served to achieve the same goal, financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was realized in cooperation with the Parliamentary Institute of the Czech Republic. It too was completed in March.
