Working Group for the Collection of Facts and Evidence for the Investigation of Crimes Committed against Serbs and Other National Communities in Kosovo-Metohija Presents its Work to Representatives of International Organizations and Embassies in Belgrade

Today, the members of the Working Group for the collection of facts and evidence for the investigation of crimes committed against Serbs and other national communities in Kosovo-Metohija presented the results of their work to representatives of international organizations and embassies in Belgrade and asked the organizations that have documentation about these crimes to put it at the Working Group’s disposal for investigative purposes.

Working Group Chair and Chairman of the Committee on Kosovo-Metohija Milovan Drecun and Working Group member and President of the Serbian Government’s Commission for Missing Persons Veljko Odalovic said that they expected the archives of international representatives, especially those KFOR contingents which had full mandates in Kosovo-Metohija, would be opened and used to investigate the missing persons cases and collect evidence on the crimes committed there.

Milovan Drecun said that the Working Group had invited to its presentation representatives of the US, UK, French, German and Italian embassies and the KFOR states responsible and in the possession of documentation needed for the ongoing investigation.

“I was unpleasantly surprised that no representatives of the embassies of the UK, France or Italy or the Belgrade office of the Council of Europe, EU Delegation or NATO responded to the invitation. It is our duty, us in public office, and a civilizational achievement, to make sure these crimes are investigated and the culprits found”, said Drecun.

He said that the Working Group had collated a single precise database on the crimes committed in Kosovo-Metohija between 1998 and 2000, which is in line with the mandate of the specialized prosecution, and processed 1,630 episodes and 3,537 documents for two operational zones, Drenica and Dukagjini.

“This documentation proves the organizational structure of the terrorist KLA which is important for determining command responsibility and which we handed over to the specialized prosecution. We have determined that the international presence in Kosovo-Metohija is in possession of information and documentation based on which certain unresolved events can be resolved”, said Drecun.

Working Group member and President of the Serbian Government’s Commission for Missing Persons Veljko Odalovic said that the Working Group had prepared several dozens of examples that the archives of KFOR, OSCE, UNMIK, EULEX and the Hague Tribunal do exist and today presented their documents to the representatives of the international community.

“Unsolved crimes are unacceptable. We focused on having the embassy representatives to call upon their military structures to have those who had the responsibility within the KFOR contingent go over their archives and let them be used because both Serbian and Albanian families are looking for information on the missing persons”, stressed Odalovic.

He said he was sure many of these cases would have their epilogue in court because the direct command responsibility of KLA was determined and announced the work on five more operational zones.

“We will not be silent and we expect full support and help to open all the archives, including those in the Hague Tribunal, in order to reach documents which can shed light onto concrete cases”, said Odalovic.
