Virtual Meeting of Chairs of Foreign Affairs Committees of Italian Parliament and Western Balkans Parliaments
Vesna Markovic, Deputy Chairperson of the National Assembly’s Foreign Affairs Committee, took part in the Interparliamentary Meeting on the future of the European integration of the Western Balkans in light of the Declaration adopted at the EU-Western Balkans Summit in Brdo pri Kranju, on 6 October this year.
The interparliamentary meeting, attended by the chairs of foreign affairs committees, was held on 10 November 2021 in the form of a video conference organised by the Italian Parliament, with the participation of representatives of Slovenia (in writing) and France, as the current and next President of the EU Council.
Taking part in the discussion, Vesna Markovic stressed that stability is definitely a significant argument in favour of enlargement. She said that the Brdo Declaration also contains an important message for us - that we are not forgotten and that enlargement is on the EU agenda. She opined that taking part in regional initiatives is the best way to unite politically and economically and the open Balkans is an opportunity that must be used. Saying that the enlargement process is taking too long, she expressed hope that even the countries that oppose it will see the advantages of EU enlargement.
