Third Meeting of the Commission for Cooperation between the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and the Chinese National People's Congress

The third meeting of the Commission for Cooperation between the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and the Chinese National People's Congress was held today via video-link.

The meeting was chaired by the National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Co-Chair of the Commission Sandra Bozic, and attended by Commission members and National Assembly deputy speakers Borko Stefanovic, Suzana Paunovic and Elvira Kovacs.

Sandra Bozic greeted the participants on behalf of National Assembly Speaker Dr Vladimir Orlic, the MPs and herself, expressing satisfaction that the Commission is finally having a meeting after the three-year break due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Bozic pointed out that the relations between Serbia and China are at the highest point in their history, at the level of a comprehensive strategic partnership embodied on the parliamentary level in the Memorandum of Understanding between the National Assembly and the Chinese National People's Congress and the Protocol on the Establishment of the Commission. "In this way, we have confirmed that cooperation between the legislative institutions is an important segment of furthering and enriching the comprehensive strategic partnership between our two countries”, said Bozic adding that "the establishment of the Commission has created an excellent framework for the improvement of cooperation between working bodies, parliamentary friendship groups and delegations in international parliamentary institutions".

Hao Mingjin, Vice Chairperson of the Chinese National People's Congress Standing Committee and Co-Chair of the Commission, said that despite the geographical distance, Serbia and China are comprehensive strategic partners that share a steel friendship. He opined that this type of interparliamentary cooperation is mutually beneficial, adding that the Chinese side is ready to continue with the positive trend of intensive exchange of contacts between the legislative bodies.

The parliamentarians agreed that regular exchange of top-tier visits, such as between the presidents of the two countries Aleksandar Vucic and Xi Jinping, as well as government officials, and over 100 realised annual visits by political and economic delegations, all testify to the extraordinary relations between the two countries.

They especially highlighted the importance of mutual support for Serbia and China’s vital interests on the multilateral level, within the framework of international organisations.

At its third meeting, the Commission discussed preserving the basic principles of international law and cooperation in multilateral organisations, cooperation in the field of trade, tourism and culture and good governance examples.

Bozic and Stefanovic thanked China for its principled stance on Kosovo-Metohija and for respecting international law and Serbia's territorial integrity and sovereignty, as well as for its support during Kosovo’s attempts to join international organisations. They also pointed out that Serbia strongly supports the territorial integrity of China, as well as the "One China" policy and the position that Taiwan and Xinjiang are inseparable parts of Chinese territory.

Bozic showed particular appreciation for our mutual support on the international level and emphasising the importance of respecting international law, especially in the current global political climate.

Elvira Kovacs spoke of the existing successful trade and economic cooperation and the increase in the volume of trade, both bilaterally and within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, which covers China's economic relations with the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, where Serbia is an active partner.

Snezana Paunovic spoke of Serbia and China’s successful joint projects in the fields of transport, infrastructure, energy and mining.

Concluding the third meeting, Commission Co-chair Sandra Bozic opined that this body is an excellent framework for the improvement of comprehensive cooperation between our parliaments, bearing in mind that it tackled very important and current topics for both countries and that the participants exchanged very important experiences related to facing contemporary challenges, which are, at the same time, concrete steps on the way to deepening and expanding our bilateral relations.
