Sixth Extraordinary Session of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia in 2013

At the request of 162 MPs, the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, MA Nebojsa Stefanovic, convened the Sixth Extraordinary Session of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia in 2013, for Friday, 21 June 2013, starting at noon.

The request to hold the extraordinary session specifies the following agenda:

1. Proposal of the Declaration of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Condemning the Acts against Hungarian Civilians in Vojvodina Committed from 1944-1945, submitted by a group of 69 MPs.

The representative of the submitters, Member of Parliament MA Nebojsa Stefanovic, said that the goal of the proposed Declaration - to condemn the acts perpetrated against Hungarian civilians in Vojvodina in the course of 1944 and 1945, is not a revision of history, but an attempt to right the wrongs and a good step toward a historic reconciliation. With this act the Serbian Assembly demonstrates that it wants to rehabilitate all those who have been unjustly convicted without court sentences, said Stefanovic, opining that the adoption of the Declaration would specifically benefit the Hungarian minority in Serbia and Serbian minority in Hungary.

Stressing that the Declaration marks a positive step toward a historic reconciliation and adoption of certain standards the Assembly can use and be proud of, Stefanovic pointed out that facing the past and reconciliation among the people living in this area is a component part of European integration, and added that regional cooperation and reconciliation are difficult tasks, but such is the essence of the European Union. All the crimes committed absolutely need to be condemned, and with this Declaration Serbia demonstrates that it is fully committed to democracy, development, respect of human and civil rights and freedoms, concluded MA Nebojsa Stefanovic.
