Serbian National Assembly Speaker with Marian Kery: Violation of International Law in Kosovo-Metohija, Cause of Problems Elsewhere

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Dr Vladimir Orlic met today with the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Assembly of the Slovak Republic Marian Kery, with whom he discussed the further improvement of parliamentary cooperation and intensification of political dialogue, which, they agreed, contributes to the enrichment of good bilateral relations between the two countries.

In the course of the meeting, the officials expressed readiness to deepen the cooperation between legislative institutions through an exchange of visits and the work of respective parliamentary friendship groups.

Dr Orlic thanked Slovakia for its continuous support of Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and for its consistent position of non-recognition of the unilaterally declared independence of so-called "Kosovo". He informed the guest about the difficult situation in the southern Serbian province, stressing that official Belgrade, led by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, continues to pursue a policy of peace, dialogue and stability for the entire region. "The difficult situation will only become more difficult in the future. Our people are facing strong pressures, and in addition to the threat of property confiscation, Kurti and the representatives of the Provisional Institutions of Self-Government in Pristina, announced that on 21 November Serbs who do not agree to the violation of international law will be severely punished. It is important that friendly countries, such as Slovakia, understand that all the abovementioned is a flagrant violation of the Brussels Agreement," said Dr Orlic, reminding that Serbia has been waiting for almost ten years for the Pristina side to fulfil its obligation and set up a Community of Serb Municipalities. "The signed agreement is being ignored, with Kurti now openly saying that he would topple any agreement and doing everything he can to completely expel Serbs from Kosovo-Metohija. Serbia will not allow that," said the National Assembly Speaker.

Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Marian Kery confirmed that the Slovak Republic would not change its position on the issue of so-called "Kosovo". "Our position is principled, just as it was in 1999 during the bombing of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and in 2008 when the independence of so-called "Kosovo" was unilaterally declared. Violations of international law can bring no good to anyone in the world and today, everything quite clearly seems to be coming back like a boomerang," Kery said. He reaffirmed that Slovakia offers Serbia, as well as the entire Western Balkan region, with strong support on the path to European integration.

In the course of the meeting, the officials also discussed strengthening economic cooperation between the two countries. In this regard, Dr Orlic pointed out that the "Open Balkans" initiative, originating from Serbia and President Vucic, offers an excellent impulse for new investors and with it an incentive for the economic progress of the entire region.
