PFG with Italy Speaks with Italian Ambassador to Serbia about Improving Two Countries’ Overall Cooperation

The Head and members of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Italy met with the Ambassador of the Republic of Italy to the Republic of Serbia Luca Gori and the Director of the Italian Cultural Institute Roberto Cincotta.

The Head of the PFG with Italy Jovan Palalic said that the meeting is of particular importance, because it takes place after the conference in Trieste entitled "Italy and the Western Balkans: Growth and Integration", which is especially significant because of to the message of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni that put the countries of the Western Balkans back in Italy’s focus as a strategic orientation, not only political, but economic and cultural as well. Palalic said that she used an expression which could be a new inspiration for greater understanding - that is the Italian Government’s job to bring more Italy to the Balkans.

In light of this, he stressed that Italy strongly supports Serbia on the path to full EU membership, but went on to point out that for Serbia, Kosovo-Metohija would always be an inalienable part of its territory.

Speaking about economic cooperation, Palalic said that, for Serbia, Italy is one of the most important foreign trade partners, as evidenced by the presence of a large number of small and medium-sized companies in the country, which gives a strong impetus to the economic cooperation and confirms that Serbia offers excellent conditions for foreign investments.

Ambassador Gori confirmed that the political relations between the two countries will be intensified because the new Italian Government has set the Balkans as a priority, as confirmed at the Conference in Trieste, strongly supported by Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani. He stressed that Italy belongs to a group of countries that is trying to stabilise relations between Belgrade and Pristina, because peace and stability are a prerequisite for economic development and Italy wants to work intensively on improving its economic cooperation with Serbia. Three important events are planned to that end in the first half of this year, perhaps the most important among them being the Business Forum which will according to the Ambassador be a symbolic moment for the renewal of economic cooperation. Italy will also be a partner country in organising the agricultural fair in Novi Sad because of an existing desire to make agriculture a priority of economic cooperation between the two countries. The Ambassador also announced an expansion of the partnership in the field of fashion, through the organisation of the month of Italian fashion in Belgrade, with a series of exhibitions, a tribute to designer Renato Balestra and a series of workshops and meetings between the fashion designers of the two countries.

"Italy is present in the traditional sectors, textile, automotive industry, banking, but Serbia is entering a new industrial phase where high-tech sectors are gaining more and more importance and Italy wants to position itself there as well", said the Ambassador.

The officials agreed that the cooperation should be expanded by strengthening interparliamentary cooperation and announced the intensification of meetings between MPs, working bodies, as well as meetings at the highest parliamentary level.
