National Assembly Speaker at 145th IPU Assembly General Debate: Improving Gender Equality and Position of Women in Serbia

The delegation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, headed by the Speaker Dr Vladimir Orlic, took part in the 145th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, held in Kigali, Rwanda, with “Gender equality and gender-sensitive parliaments as drivers of change for a more resilient and peaceful world” as the topic of the General Debate.

The National Assembly Speaker’s speech was published on the official IPU website, in which he points out that in the Republic of Serbia there is a high awareness of the importance of gender equality, as well as appropriate institutions and laws that regulate this area in accordance with the highest standards. "In addition to the fact that gender equality and equal opportunities for women and men belong to the basic democratic principles prescribed by the Constitution, the principle of gender equality is also included in the Law on Prohibition of Discrimination and a systemic law in this area was also adopted - Law on Gender Equality", says Dr Orlic in his speech.

He also reminded the attending that gender-responsive budgeting was introduced in previous years and amendments to criminal, labour and family legislation were adopted which marked the beginning of a decisive fight to prevent any form of violence against women, and the amendments to the electoral laws stipulated that no less than 40% of candidates on the electoral lists for parliamentary and local elections must belong to the less represented sex. "However, I would like to emphasise that the National Assembly is not alone in this process, the entire country is committed to dedicating itself to the common goal of improving gender equality and the position of women in Serbia."
