National Assembly Speaker Opens National Conference on World Children’s Day: Child Safety Remains Top Priority

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and Chairman of the Committee on the Rights of the Child Dr Vladimir Orlic opened the national conference on World Children’s Day at the National Assembly with the topic: “How to keep a child safe – This is where I live, this is where I am safe!” The conference for high-school students, representatives of student parliaments from all over Serbia, was co-organised by the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and the organisation "Friends of Children of Serbia".

Addressing the participants of the conference, Dr Orlic highlighted the need to inform and educate young people, strengthen the intersectoral cooperation of competent institutions and engage all available support mechanisms, in order to protect the rights and safety of children. "In 2020, we introduced a new subject into schools named "Digital World", which, among other things, teaches students how to use the Internet safely, and in 2021 we launched the national platform for education and prevention of violence "I Take Care of You". With that and numerous other projects, we have done a lot. But no matter how much we do, we always have to do more, because a safe childhood is a top priority for every state, society and individual," said the National Assembly Speaker, recalling the projects and programmes implemented by the state in cooperation with educational institutions.

He added that keeping young people in Serbia is a strategic commitment and the chief state policy goal. "We are fighting for you with all the new investment projects, roads, schools, kindergartens and playgrounds, science and technology parks that we are building today, through the fight for every place in Serbia, for a healthy environment and good life everywhere. We are doing everything we can to ensure that young people stay and live in their country. And everything we do today, the state does for you and belongs to you. Children's safety is one of the most important tasks we have," concluded Dr Orlic, wishing the young parliamentarians successful work and a happy World Children's Day.

As part of the national conference, representatives of student parliaments had the opportunity to participate in the research and discussion on the topic of child and youth safety, after which they summarized their conclusions and forwarded them to the representatives of the executive and legislative authorities for evaluation.
