National Assembly Speaker Ivica Dacic Meets with UN Under-Secretary and Special Adviser on Prevention of Genocide

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Ivica Dacic met with UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide Alice Wairimu Nderitu.

National Assembly Speaker Ivica Dacic said that regional cooperation is a priority for Serbia and that we are deeply committed to preserving peace and stability in the region. He pointed out that serious and difficult problems have been inherited from the past which need hard work to be overcome. "All who committed crimes must be identified and brought to justice, but these crimes must not be divided into "ours and theirs", said Ivica Dacic, stressing that the politicisation and instrumentalisation of crimes only deepens divisions and does not contribute to overcoming problems.

UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide Alice Wairimu Nderitu spoke about her mandate and activities on genocide prevention. The mandate of the UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide Alice also includes the fight against hate speech, as defined in 2019 Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech. She pointed out that they cooperate on this matter with a large number of parliaments in the world and expressed readiness to realise this type of cooperation with the National Assembly in the future.

The officials also discussed the situation in the region and the UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide Nderitu informed the National Assembly Speaker about her visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina earlier this year.
