National Assembly First Time in Observation Mission Under Auspices of International Organization of La Francophonie at Tunisian Presidential Election

MA Jadranka Jovanovic, Head of the National Assembly’s standing delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of La Francophonie (APF), took part in the International Organization of La Francophonie observation mission for the Tunisian presidential election.

Along with other observation organizations, the International Organization of La Francophonie deployed an observation mission comprised of ten members from different countries – Serbia, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Romania, Ghana, Canada, Cameroon, Egypt and Niger. The objective of the mission, in accordance with the doctrine of La Francophonie, was to assess the legislative and institutional framework of the election process and highlight best practice examples.

“It is a great honour for Serbia to be invited, for the first time, by the International Organization of La Francophonie to take part in the observation mission for the presidential election in Tunisia, a friendly country that did not recognize the unilaterally declared independence of so-called Kosovo. In the course of the six-day mission we had the opportunity to meet the key persons involved in the election activities, institutions in charge of conducting the election process and representatives of the political parties, civil society and the media. By changing its status from observer to associate member of La Francophonie, Serbia became fully engaged in all of the activities of the great international organization” said the Head of the National Assembly’s standing delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of La Francophonie MA Jadranka Jovanovic.

The presidential election in Tunisia was held on 15 September and the official decision on the date of the second round is yet to be made since none of the candidates won more than 50% of the vote.
