National Assembly Deputy Speaker Prof. Dr Zarko Korac Opens Gathering on International Literacy Day

Yesterday, at the National Assembly House, National Assembly Deputy Speaker Prof. Dr Zarko Korac opened a gathering to mark International Literacy Day, 8 September, and the completion of the biggest adult literacy project in Serbia – Second Chance.


Speaking of the importance of literacy and communication, National Assembly Deputy Speaker Prof. Dr Zarko Korac congratulated the attendants of project Second Chance on the successful completion of their education, saying that, by investing efforts into their education, they have attained a noble goal both for their own sake and the society they live in. Deputy Speaker Korac said that according to statistical data a great many Serbian citizens have only elementary education and he hopes that project Second Chance will help improve the situation. He added that electronic literacy is an important segment of the literacy project as it is equally essential for communication nowadays.

The gathering was attended by MPs Donka Banovic and Ljiljana Lucic, and the participants were also addressed by Prof. Dr Miomir Despotovic, key expert working on project Second Chance, Slavica Jaksic of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development Elementary Education Sector, Jelica Colic, EU Delegation project manager, Dr Anita Jakobsone, Second Chance project team leader, as well as the project attendees and their teachers.

The speakers emphasised the importance of passing the Law on Adult Education which enables life-long education and regulates the sphere for the first time in the Republic of Serbia. Adult literacy was identified as one of the goals of the 2020 European Agenda, with 4.5 million EUR from the European funds invested into adult education in Serbia. The project includes 70 elementary and 70 vocational high schools and a total of 4500 attendees.

The gathering also premiered a documentary on project Second Chance - functional elementary education for adults.
The project is realised in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development, with the financial support of the European Union.
