National Assembly Deputy Speaker Marina Ragus Speaks with Turkish Ambassador about Improving Bilateral Relations and Supporting Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue
Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Marina Ragus met with the Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey to Belgrade, H.E. Ilhan Saygili.
In the course of the meeting, the officials focused on improving cooperation between the two parliaments, especially through the activities of the Foreign Affairs Committee, exchange of visits by parliamentary delegations, as well as through the formalisation and more active work of parliamentary friendship groups, which represent an important mechanism of parliamentary diplomacy.
Deputy Speaker Ragus stressed that Serbia advocates a stable and peaceful Balkans and warned of the extremely difficult and worrying situation in the southern Serbian province. She pointed out that in Kosovo-Metohija, the human and civil rights of Serbs are being constantly violated, bringing their situation to the point of life-threatening and existential risk.
In that context, Ragus called on Turkey, as an important regional and international actor, to use its influence to support the continuation of the constructive dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, with full respect for the human and civil rights of the Serbian people in Kosovo-Metohija. She stressed that respecting international law, UN Security Council Resolution 1244 and the Brussels Agreement is essential.
In this regard, the formation of a community of municipalities with a Serb majority, as guaranteed by the Brussels Agreement, is a key condition for advancing dialogue. Ragus recalled that the formation of the community has been awaited for twelve years.
Deputy Speaker Ragus emphasised that she believes the experience and knowledge of H.E. Ambassador Saygili will significantly contribute to overcoming all challenges and strengthening cooperation between our countries.
Ambassador Saygili agreed that improving relations between Serbia and Turkey is of mutual interest, and expressed support for further cooperation, not only at the political and parliamentary levels, but also in the fields of economy, culture, education, and especially in the spheres of science, artificial intelligence and modern technologies. He emphasised that Turkey and Serbia have already built strong foundations for cooperation, but that there is room for its further expansion into new areas of common interest.
