National Assembly Deputy Speaker Dr Nenad Popovic Signs Declaration of Inter-Parliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy

Today, in Athens, National Assembly Deputy Speaker Dr Nenad Popovic signed the Declaration of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy (IAO), on the behalf of the National Assembly, calling for strengthening the role of orthodoxy in the modern world, overcoming national and religious differences, protection of national and religious minorities and cooperation among parliaments.

The Declaration marking the 20th anniversary of the international organisation established in 1993 at the initiative of the Hellenic Parliament, was signed by the IAO member countries’ parliamentary speakers and deputy speakers, on the behalf of their countries.
“Serbia takes regular and active part in the organisation’s activities and enjoys exceptional parliamentary cooperation with all orthodox countries. The National Assembly’s friendship groups with these countries have the most members, with the 60-member Friendship Group with Russia being the largest among them. This best proves of the importance the Serbian parliamentarians ascribe to the cooperation with their fellow orthodox countries”, said Popovic.
The National Assembly’s delegation to the 20th anniversary session of the General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy with the topic “Parliamentary Democracy – Christianity – Orthodoxy: values and concepts”, which ends tomorrow, comprises Dr Nenad Popovic, National Assembly Deputy Speaker, Prof. Dr Mileta Poskurica, Head of the National Assembly’s standing delegation to IAO and Aleksandar Cotric, member of the National Assembly’s standing delegation to IAO.
Serbia joined the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy in 1995, an organisation also comprising Albania, Armenia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Georgia, Greece, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Romania, the Russian Federation, Montenegro, Slovakia, Ukraine as member states, as well as parliamentary delegations of Australia, Asia, Africa and the United States of America.
