National Assembly Delegation to PD CEI at Video Conference on Cultural Diversity and Identity in Europe

The National Assembly’s standing delegation to the Parliamentary Dimension of the Central European Initiative (PD CEI), headed by Dr Dragana Barisic, and comprising Natasa Jovanovic and Viktor Jevtovic took part in the video conference on cultural diversity and identity in Europe on 21 April 2021. The conference was organized under the auspices of the Hungarian chairmanship of the PD CEI Committee on Cultural Affairs.

Ecouraging intercultural dialogue and preserving cultural diversity are among the priorities of the CEI strategy, especially given the exceptional cultural resources and values specific to the CEI region that contribute to the shaping of its many coexisting identities, while at the same time providing a solid basis for a shared cultural identity. The conference aims to reaffirm the close link between cultural diversity and the unique, coexisting identities in the Central European region, by promoting openness and respect for differences, and at the same time fostering a culture of tolerance.

After the introductory speeches, Jeroen Schokkenbroek, Head of the Council of Europe Directorate of Anti-discrimination, Herbert Dorfman, Member of the European Parliament, and Kairat Abdrakhmanov, High Commissioner on National Minorities, addressed the conference.

It was estimated that the global pandemic had significant economic effects, which additionally reflected the need for stronger regional ties and mutual support. In addition, the complexity of the cultural diversity in Europe and the mechanisms for empowering diversity were also discussed.

The conference was attended by representatives of parliaments from the CEI region.
