National Assembly Delegation at Parliamentary Seminar on European Union Energy Policy and its Impact on EU Acceding Countries in Brussels

A delegation of the National Assembly took part in the parliamentary seminar on “European Union energy policy and its impact on EU acceding countries”, held in Brussels, on 21 February 2013, and organised by the Directorate-General for cooperation with national parliaments and the Directorate-General for External Policies of the European Parliament.

The seminar was intended for the members of the national parliaments of Western Balkan countries and Turkey, and the National Assembly was represented by Aleksandra Tomic, Chairperson of the Committee on the Economy, Regional Development, Trade, Tourism and Energy, Slavica Savic and Radojko Obradovic, members of the Committee, and Ljubisa Stojmirovic, member of the European Integration Committee.
The conclusion of the one-day seminar was that stable energy supply is an important regional issue which should be addressed in cooperation with the EU. In addition, it is necessary to enable and stimulate investment into renewable energy sources, as well as ensure adequate environmental protection, with acceptable prices of energy-generating products. The participants agreed that exchange of experiences and opinions on energy production and energy infrastructure is very important both for the Western Balkan countries and Turkey and the European Parliament and European Commission.
Since the issue is of regional importance, the role of the Energy Community Secretariat gains in importance, so it was suggested that the competent committees of the parliaments of Western Balkan countries and Turkey meet twice a year to discuss energy production in the region of South-East Europe.
Besides the Serbian delegation, the seminar was also attended by the delegations of Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, UNMIK/Kosovo representatives, as well as members of the European Parliament and representatives of the European Commission. Jerzy Buzek, member of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, gave the opening address.
On the same day the National Assembly’s delegation also attended the workshop on Energy Community Strategy: Political, Environmental and Economic Challenges in South-Eastern Europe, at the European Parliament. The participants were addressed by Jelko Kacin, European Parliament Rapporteur for Serbia, and the workshop was also attended by EP members, members of the parliaments of Western Balkan countries and Turkey, as well as numerous experts and NGO representatives.
