National Assembly Delegation at Interparliamentary Conference on “Economic Governance and Job Creation in the EU and Enlargement Countries”
On 15–16 October 2015, Sarajevo played host to the Interparliamentary Conference on “Economic governance and job creation in the EU and enlargement countries”, co-organised by the European Parliament’s Directorate-General for External Policies, Regional Cooperation Council and the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Conference was attended by MPs and civil servants from the parliaments of the Western Balkan countries and Turkey – delegations from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Macedonia, Serbia and Turkey, as well as representatives of UNMIK/Kosovo; and from the side of the European Parliament by the members of the committees in charge of economic and monetary affairs, legal affairs, employment and social affairs, environmental protection and foreign affairs - Theodor Dumitru Stolojan, Dubravka Suica, Mady Delvaux, Javi López, Amjad Bashir and Gerolf Annemans.
The National Assembly delegation comprised European Integration Committee members Dusica Stojkovic and Gordana Comic, as well as members of the Committee on the Economy, Regional Development, Trade, Tourism and Energy Prof. Dr Vladimir Marinkovic and Radmilo Kostic.
The Conference focused on such issues as economic development and job creation in light of the new challenges faced by the European Union and the enlargement countries. The MEPs said that it is necessary to foster the economic reform in the enlargement countries in order to prepare their economies for EU membership.
MP Dusica Stojkovic emphasised the staunch support of the economic reforms by 70% of the citizens of Serbia. This shows support for the Serbian Government’s efforts to conduct reform toward macroeconomic stabilisation and deficit reduction, and change the structure of the economy. Prof. Dr Vladimir Marinkovic said that the National Assembly had passed a series of laws and amendments and modifications to the existing legislation in the spheres of labour, construction and finalisation of the privatisation process, with the objective of creating an attractive environment for entrepreneurship and employment. On the occasion, Gordana Comic appealed for solidarity and assistance for EU enlargement countries.
In the ensuing debate, the participants agreed that there are many challenges for all the countries in the region concerning the still high unemployment rates and attracting investments, two issues that should be tackled together with the European integration process. Therefore, they should join forces on strengthening the role of the parliament in the EU accession process, especially concerning economic reform which is a vital issue for the Western Balkan countries and Turkey.
