The Chairman of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Predrag Markovic, today officially asked NATO Parliamentary Assembly (PA) President, Bert Koenders, to grant Serbia associate member status with the organisation.

In a letter to Koenders, Markovic asked for Serbia to be given associate member status in NATO PA, as it had been invited to join the Partnership for Peace Programme both at the NATO Riga Summit in November 2006, and by NATO Secretary General, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, on 7 December 2006, and formally joined the Programme today.

A delegation of the Serbian National Assembly has, thus far, taken part in NATO PA sittings as an observer.
