Members of Parliamentary Friendship Group with Israel Meet with Israeli Ambassador to Serbia

The Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Israel, Borislav Stefanovic, and the Parliamentary Friendship Group members met today, at the National Assembly House, with the Israeli Ambassador to Serbia, H.E. Yossef Levy.

The meeting focused on the recent appearance of extremist anti-Semitic posters in Belgrade, with the officials exchanging opinions on the topic and agreeing to undertake concrete joint actions to fight anti-Semitism in Serbia.

On the behalf of the Parliamentary Friendship Group and the National Assembly MPs, Borislav Stefanovic severely condemned the anti-Semitic posters which have, he said, raised great concerns both in the public and the National Assembly. Stefanovic stressed that Serbia and Israel share traditionally good and friendly relations which the recent events must not disrupt in any way.

Ambassador Levy thanked the Parliamentary Friendship Group members for their engagement in the Group, deeming that the Serbian and Jewish people share strong historic ties considering that both nations had shared the same fate and sufferings in the wars fought on the territory. Ambassador Levy believes that, occurrences of anti-Semitism in the country notwithstanding, Serbia is not an anti-Semitic society, and also condemned the activities of racist organisations in Serbia which, he said, work equally against the Serbian and the Jewish people.

The Parliamentary Friendship Group members stated that anti-Semitism has no place in Serbia and agreed that the occurrence needs to be met with decisive state action.

The officials agreed that concrete steps need to be undertaken to make sure the perpetrators face justice, that the printing and sale of books and all publications carrying anti-Semitic content should be banned, as should the operation of extremist organisations, and that Serbia’s educational system should include content which would teach the schoolchildren about the holocaust and present them with historic facts about the sufferings of the Serbian and Jewish people
