Judiciary, Public Administration and Local Self-Government Committee Members Talk to World Judges’ Association Rapporteur

The Chairman of the Committee on the Judiciary, Public Administration and Local Self-Government, Petar Petrovic and Committee and member Laszlo Varga met today, at the National Assembly House, with World Judges’ Association rapporteur Janja Roblek.

Slovenian judge Janja Roblek asked about the Committee’s work, the Committee’s cooperation with the Serbian Judges’ Society and the election procedure for court presidents.

Committee Chairman Petar Petrovic informed the guest about the duties of the Committee on the Judiciary, Public Administration and Local Self-Government, especially as regards discussing bills and submitting amendments. Petrovic explained that the Committee sittings are open to the public and representatives of non-governmental organisations often submit initiatives to amend bills via the MPs or Committee members. Speaking of the legislative activity planned for the near future, Petrovic said that the amendments and modifications to three judiciary reform laws are currently in assembly procedure, which regulate the organisation of courts, the work of judges and public prosecution. According to Petrovic, the Assembly is expected to discuss the proposal for the election of the President of the Supreme Court of Cassation and appellate court presidents in October.

Talking to Janja Roblek, Committee member Laszlo Varga said that judiciary reform has been conducted satisfactorily from the aspect of national minorities, but the mechanism for the election of judges, members of national minorities, needs to be further developed as regards the network of courts and approach of national minorities to the judiciary academy. He also drew attention to the flaws in the Law on Official Use of National Minority Languages which does not allow for trials in national minority languages, and the amendments to which, he said, are soon to be expected.

Speaking of the responsibilities Serbia can expect in its progress toward the European Union, the officials agreed that the talks will be demanding, and the Committee Chairman said that harmonisation of the national judiciary legislation with European Union regulations is one of the Committee and National Assembly’s priorities in the upcoming period.
