Jelena Zaric Kovacevic and Aleksandar Markovic Hold Video Presentation for UAE National Defence College Students

The Chairperson of the Committee on Constitutional and Legislative Issues and Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with the United Arab Emirates, Jelena Zaric Kovacevic, and the Chairman of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee Aleksandar Markovic held a virtual meeting with the students of the United Arab Emirates National Defence College.

Zaric Kovacevic was most pleased that an eminent educational institution such as the National Defence College from a close and friendly country such as the United Arab Emirates has initiated communication.

"The closeness of our two countries is evidenced in their intensive bilateral cooperation and numerous joint projects and activities, this conversation included. Just last week, our president Aleksandar Vucic visited the United Arab Emirates and had a very constructive talk with the heir to the throne of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al Nahyan, who is also the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the UAE Armed Forces. On the occasion, they agreed to build a factory for the production of the Chinese COVID vaccine in Serbia in cooperation with the Emirates, which we consider very important. Also, last week we received the second allotment of medical assistance from the Emirates in the form of ultrasound machines, scanners, mobile X-ray machines, MRIs, flowmeters and everything needed to care for the patients infected with the corona virus, which we are very grateful for", stressed Zaric Kovacevic.

She announced that next week, the Parliamentary Friendship Group with the United Arab Emirates will have a video meeting with the UAE Parliamentary Friendship Group with Serbia.

"This will be the first video meeting that our National Assembly has with a foreign friendship group, and I, as the Head of the Friendship Group with the Emirates, am especially glad about that. I am sure that this meeting will give a special boost to the improvement of parliamentary and overall bilateral relations between our two countries", concluded Zaric Kovacevic.

In a special segment, Aleksandar Markovic presented the competencies and work of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee. He pointed out that in all democratic societies parliaments are recognized as the most appropriate place to represent the public interest in the field of security, because the parliament is the highest representative body in the country, elected directly by the citizens and, therefore, the body with the widest democratic capacity.

"Thus, the parliaments are given the ambitious task to make sure that the security system ensures an efficient and effective realisation and protection of socially accepted values and goals. Serbia is no exception compared to other European countries. With the development of democratic institutions and the general democratisation of Serbian society, the very concept of democratic and civilian control of the security sector has been strengthened by other state actors (e.g. the Ombudsman or the Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection) and extended to include the general public, yet the parliament has remained crucial for ensuring the democratic governance of the entire security sector", stressed Markovic.

In the course of the meeting, the chairs of the two parliamentary committees briefed the students on the role, competencies, structure and work of the National Assembly, as well as its foreign policy activities and the work of parliamentary friendship groups.
