Today, the Chairman of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality, Meho Omerovic, took part in a seminar titled Ministry of Interior in Combating and the Prevention of Discrimination, held at the National Assembly House.

Addressing the participants of the seminar, Meho Omerovic said that respecting human and minority rights is the cornerstone of a democratic society. In the Republic of Serbia, human and minority rights are guaranteed by the Constitution, ratified international treaties and conventions, as well as laws, said Omerovic stressing the importance of the National Assembly as the supreme legislative body for the creation of a social environment conducive to exercising human and minority rights. He also stressed the importance of independent state bodes for the protection of human and minority rights such as the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Ombudsman and the Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection. Discussing the Annual Report of the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality and the Ombudsman, the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality learned that the implementation of the laws can be problematic and that the Roma, poor, persons with disabilities, elderly, women and LGBT population are the ones who suffer most from discrimination, said the Committee Chairman.
The Chief of Police Milorad Veljovic, Director of the Office for Human and Minority Rights of the Government of the Republic of Serbia Suzana Paunovic, Commissioner for the Protection of Equality Dr Nevena Petrusic and the Head of the Political Section of the European Union Delegation to Serbia Luca Bianconi also spoke at the seminar.
The seminar focused on anti-discrimination mechanisms and the tasks of the Anti-Discrimination Strategy the Government of the Republic of Serbia is to adopt, as well as the role of the Ministry of Interior and the police in combating discrimination. Labour discrimination is also among the topics of the seminar, as are hate speech and hate crimes, and the assessment of the situation as regards human rights and respecting the principles of non-discrimination in Serbia.
