Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality Committee Chairman at Regional Conference “Being LGBT in Eastern Europe”

The Chairman of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality Meho Omerovic took part in the regional conference organized under the auspices of the project “Being LGBT in Eastern Europe”, on 23 March 2017 in Belgrade by UNDP.

LGBT problems are not just that population’s problems but problems of all the citizens and institutions, said the Chairman of the National Assembly Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality, adding that the fight against prejudice and stereotypes continues, with the help of independent bodies and NGOs.

Saying that there is no systemic discrimination in Serbia, Omerovic stated that laws have helped improve the status of LGBT people in Serbia, as have LGBT individuals who openly declare their sexual preferences and speak of the problems.

“I believe that we will make new strides in the improvement of the rights and status of LGBT people”, said Omerovic, stating that the Parliament and its committees lend their full support to the cause.

He said he was sure the problems surrounding Belgrade Pride are behind us and that it would in future be a peaceful gathering without much police presence.

Stating that prejudice and stereotypes are slowly being overcome, Omerovic mentioned last year’s Pride which was a peaceful affair, unlike the one in 2010 rocked by horrible unrest, vandalism and injured participants and police officers.

Omerovic believes that the fact that Belgrade is the venue of the regional conference is a recognition of Serbia’s efforts to improve the status of the LGBT community.

“We are well aware of the vulnerable groups. Persons with disabilities, women victims of violence and LGBT people are among the most vulnerable. We will do all in our power to improve the status of the LGBT population”, said Omerovic.
