Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality Committee Chairman Talks to Representatives of Committee for International Cooperation of Medical Students – Serbia

The Chairman of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality Meho Omerovic met with representatives of the Committee for International Cooperation of Medical Students – Serbia (IFMSA Serbia) on 10 December, International Human Rights Day.

Meho Omerovic briefed his guests on the activities of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality and the National Assembly’s legislative activities aimed at protecting patients’ rights and improving the position of vulnerable population categories. Omerovic also mentioned the laws passed under the current legislature – the Law on Patients’ Rights, Law on Protection of Persons with Mental Difficulties and the Law amending the Law on Extra-Judicial Proceedings which enables legally invisible persons, mostly the Roma population, to be entered into birth registry books.

The representatives of the Committee for International Cooperation of Medical Students – Serbia, Masa Davidovic, Amela Hamidovic, Kristina Mihajlovski and Biljana Tesic presented the activities of their organisation based on its members’ voluntary work. They pointed out the role of medical students in health education of the Roma population, psycho-social assistance to victims of violence, material and psychological assistance to socially endangered population categories and raising human rights awareness.

The participants of the meeting exchanged opinions on the possible cooperation between the Committee for International Cooperation of Medical Students – Serbia and the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality on issues concerning patients’ rights protection, with a special focus on the health education of the Roma population. They said it would be very useful and important to organise a Committee sitting outside of the National Assembly headquarters in a local community and establish direct contact and closer cooperation with the members of the Roma population.
