Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality Committee Chairman Meets with Head of EU Delegation Political Section

The Chairman of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality Meho Omerovic met today at the National Assembly House with the Head of the Political Section at the EU Delegation to Serbia Noora Hayrinen to discuss the Committee’s upcoming activities.

First off, Meho Omerovic highlighted the importance of EU negotiation chapters 23 and 24 which have a key role in Serbia’s EU accession efforts. He went on to brief the guests on the scope of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality, stressing that it tackles the problems afflicting the most vulnerable population categories - persons with disabilities, Roma, the elderly, LGBT persons and certain national minorities. The Committee has also been focusing on domestic violence and violence against women, as well as women empowerment.

The Head of the Political Section at the EU Delegation to Serbia Noora Hayrinen and associates wanted to know about the Committee’s plans for the immediate future and how they can, as representatives of the EU in Serbia, help in the realization of the Committee’s and the National Assembly’s planned activities.

The Committee Chairman informed the guests about the working body’s successful cooperation with independent state institutions and the non-governmental sector. He said that the Committee reviews the annual reports submitted by the Ombudsman, Commissioner for Protection of Equality and the Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection, adopts conclusions on them and forwards the conclusions to the National Assembly for consideration. He added that in the coming period the MPs will be reviewing a number of bills in the Committee’s purview.

He also informed the guests about the Committee sittings held outside of the National Assembly seat saying that they are extremely important because only by going out in the field can the Committee members see the problems the citizens are faced with first hand.

Meho Omerovic opined that the Parliament’s supervisory role could be advanced especially when it comes to the implementation of the laws passed by the institution.

Following a constructive discussion the officials agreed that meetings such as this one are important for the intensification of cooperation, exchange of experiences and ideas and realization of future projects, all in the interest of improving the Committee’s work.
