Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality Committee Chairman Aleksandar Markovic at Conference "Equal. Safe. Empowered"
The Conference "Equal. Safe. Empowered" was organised by the Cabinet of Minister without portfolio in charge of gender equality, prevention of violence against women and economic and political empowerment of women to mark 25 November, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
The "Empowered" panel focused on the need to further improve the legal framework so as to reduce violence in society and gender discrimination, as well as on the cooperation with civil society organizations in the combating violence against women.
As one of the panellists, Aleksandar Markovic the Chairman of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality, stressed that the basic prerequisite for improving the overall position of women in society is their economic empowerment, as well as the empowerment of women not to suffer violence and to report violence. He added that the institutions that should provide victims with support and protection from violence and violations of the law need to be strengthened as well. He said that the legal framework is good, but it needs to be further improved and its effective application needs to be ensured. He went on to say that changing awareness and combating stereotypes also requires additional work. He then spoke about the role of women's non-governmental organizations directly involved in providing help and support to women victims of gender-based violence and pointed out that their contribution is extremely large because they were the initiators and for years advocated for the promotion of the idea of gender equality and the application of the principle of zero tolerance to violence. As a good example of the cooperation of the National Assembly with civil society organizations and civic associations, he cited the establishment of the Parliamentary Group for the Improvement of the Position of Persons with Disabilities.
The conference was held as part of the beginning of the campaign “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence”, and was attended by the President of the Republic of Serbia, National Assembly Deputy Speaker Elvira Kovacs, ministers in the Serbian Government, ambassadors and representatives of the civil sector.
