Green Parliamentary Group Organizes Roundtable on “Air pollution – State-of-Play and What Can Be Done”

On Wednesday, 13 November, the informal Green Parliamentary Group organized a roundtable on “Air pollution – state-of-play and what can be done”.


The gathering was opened by the coordinator of the Green Parliamentary Group MP Nada Lazic who emphasized the importance of disseminating accurate data on air quality and sources of pollution.

Minister of Environmental Protection Goran Trivan, Head of the Air Quality Department at the Environmental Protection Agency Milenko Jovanovic, Andrej Sostaric of the Institute of Public Health of Belgrade, Uros Rakic of the Institute of Public Health of Serbia, Mirjana Jovanovic of the Belgrade Open School, Ivana Krsic of the Environmental Protection Secretariat of the City of Nis, Zvezdan Kalmar on behalf of the National Convention on the EU Working Group 27, spoke at the panel discussion on air quality and the impact of air pollution on human health in the Republic of Serbia, with the moderation of Aleksandar Macura of RES Foundation. Other representatives of relevant public institutions, international organizations and the civil sector also took part in the discussion.

MP Dubravka Filipovski drew attention to the issue of private polluters and improving the capacities of air quality monitoring stations in the Republic of Serbia.

Minister Goran Trivan said that air quality improvement measures need to be grounded in accurate data and duly established measurements and that he would push for an increase in the number of air quality monitoring stations i.e. operational and technical capacities and authority of the Environmental Protection Agency.

The attending agreed that it is vital to include the media more in the efforts to keep the public duly informed about the quality of the air.

In addition to the coordinator of the Green Parliamentary Group MP Nada Lazic, MPs Jasmina Karanac, Predrag Jelenkovic, Dubravka Filipovski, Sonja Pavlovic, Gordana Comic and Olena Papuga also took part in the roundtable.

The realization of this activity was supported by the United Nations Development Programme in Serbia under the auspices of project “Capacity Development for Improved Implementation of Multilateral Environmental Agreements”, financed by the Global Environment Facility.
